About me

Dr Giammarco Rao is a Lecturer within the School of Law at the University of Westminster. His research primarily focuses on International Arbitration, International Commercial Law, Public International Law, International Economic Law, Legal History, Legal Theories, and Legal Argumentation. 

As an Ilse Schmitthoff Research Fellow, he completed a PhD at Queen Mary University of London, where he also completed a Master of Laws (LL.M) in Comparative and International Dispute Resolution with Distinction. He also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Law from the University of Libera Università degli Studi Sociali LUISS Guido Carli.

As a practitioner, his work focuses on international arbitrations involving commercial, investment treaty, and public international law matters. He is well versed in civil and common law procedures, having worked on disputes seated in jurisdictions across the globe, including in Africa, the USA, Latin America, and Europe. He has often been involved in high-value and complex matters administered by ICSID, UNCITRAL, ICC, and the PCA. 

Research

His main areas of research include: International Arbitration, International Commercial Law, Public International Law, International Economic Law, Legal History, Legal Theories, and Legal Argumentation. 

He is currently working on different projects, including: historical research on the evolution of the concepts of party autonomy and enforcement of the arbitration agreement in the English legal framework; a conceptual history of Most Favoured Nation Clauses from the 1700s up to date; methodological approaches to the role of African States in the evolution of the Investment Arbitration regime; the application of Brandom's rational reconstruction process theory to international investment case law.
