About me
My 3rd level education began in 1996 at Limerick Institute of Technology from where I graduated with a diploma in civil engineering in 1999. I took some time out to work in the construction industry and returned to education at Kingston University and graduated with a degree in civil engineering in 2002. Pursuing further education while working in industry, I took up a day-release post-graduate course in project management at London Southbank University and I graduated with a masters in 2005.
My professional career in construction has been focused mainly in contracting, including site engineering, planning, project management and dealing with contractual issues on projects around London in all matters of structural works on commercial and residential projects, both new-build and specialist refurbishment. In 2021 I was awarded full membership to the Chartered Institute of Building. It has been my ambition to move into education for some time now, so it is an honour to join the teaching staff at this university.
Teaching
My lecturing role at University of Westminster as of August 2021 is my first teaching position having spent over 20 years involved in engineering, construction & management.
I am currently (semester 1, 2021) undertaking a postgraduate certificate in higher education which will be achieved by summer 2022. I am enjoying the process of building on my professional knowledge, learning a new profession and applying what I learn in the classroom as I develop new skills.
Research
My undergraduate research (2002) for my degree in civil engineering at Kingston University was materials laboratory based. It involved the testing and comparison of recycled aggregate concrete and normal aggregate concrete.
My postgraduate research (2005) for my masters in project management was a study in motivation and into the motivational factors driving construction project managers.
