Working in the university’s professional studio facilities has been a highlight. These practical experiences have helped me identify my strengths and weaknesses in different audio production roles, guiding me toward a specific career path and refining my skills for the job market.
Why did you choose the University of Westminster?
When searching for a postgraduate course in audio production, I wanted a course in a vibrant, culturally rich city with ample networking, internships, and cultural opportunities. The University of Westminster in London stood out because its location is a global hub for the music industry, with numerous renowned music labels and studios accessible within an hour. The Audio Production MA course offered a comprehensive curriculum with hands-on projects and feedback from experienced professionals, allowing students to explore various audio-related career options.
How has your experience been studying in London?
Studying in London has been fantastic. Before London, I studied in Beijing, Washington, DC, and Seoul, all capital cities with thriving economies. London is dynamic and inclusive, with a rich history and diverse cultural influences. The regular cultural and art exhibitions, as well as a variety of international restaurants, make London a unique and vibrant place to live. I especially enjoy visiting Soho for its pedestrian streets, interesting shops, and theatres. The blend of historical buildings and modern attractions creates an immersive experience.
What have you particularly enjoyed about your course?
The course has been incredibly engaging, offering hands-on opportunities to work on various sound projects, including animation, sound design, radio programs, film post-production, game sound design, music remixing, and more. Working in the university’s professional studio facilities has been a highlight. These practical experiences have helped me identify my strengths and weaknesses in different audio production roles, guiding me toward a specific career path and refining my skills for the job market.
How have you found academic support as part of your studies?
The academic support has been excellent. The classes on recording, mixing, and using DAWs in music production have been very helpful. For more creative projects that require trial and error, private tutorial sessions with lecturers have been invaluable. The technicians are also very instructive, helping with studio gear usage and technical issues.
Are there any stand-out facilities associated with your course?
The course offers access to professional studios equipped with various industry equipment. Small studios with two speakers are ideal for small recording sessions, while large studios with professional mixing consoles and 5.1 surround mixing are perfect for larger projects. Working in these industry-standard studios with state-of-the-art equipment has been a pleasure. Students also have access to a variety of high-quality music hardware, such as high-end condenser microphones, classic compressors, and preamps.
Tell us about any activities that you have undertaken outside of your course.
Outside of my course, I took a four-day trip to Hastings where I recorded actor voices and captured ambient sounds for our final film project. This hands-on experience was integral to our assessment and provided valuable real-world application of what we had learned.
What would your advice be to someone considering studying at Westminster?
Reach out to the course leader with any questions or concerns. If possible, visit the university in person through an Open Day or by booking a campus tour. Observing current students working in the studios and talking with the technicians can provide valuable insights.
What's the best aspect of being a University of Westminster student?
At the Harrow campus, you meet many creative people from different countries, which can lead to great friendships, broadened horizons, and collaborative projects. The campus library has a variety of study areas with a great view, providing an ideal study environment.
What was the most surprising or unexpected aspect of your Westminster experience?
Making friends at an orientation session for future students was a pleasant surprise. I expected to share my experiences and thoughts, but it turned into an opportunity to meet people willing to help me, creating a supportive network.
