Communication MA – 2022

Westminster is an amazingly diverse place, offering students unique experiences and helping them to determine and achieve their life goals. I have spent five years at Westminster, and now, at the end of my journey, I know my experience in London would not be the same without it.

Why did you choose the University of Westminster?

I started my journey at Westminster in 2015, applying for the Journalism BA degree (which is now part of the Digital Media BA degree). I was beyond thrilled when I received my unconditional offer. I did some research before applying, and it amazed me how diverse and international the University was. When it was time to choose a university for my Master's degree, I did not hesitate for even a second; my obvious choice was Westminster. I loved every moment I spent here as an undergraduate student, so I had no doubts that I wanted to continue my journey at the University.

How has your experience been studying in London?

Living and studying in London has been one of the most challenging but, at the same time, one of the most exciting things I have ever done. I came to the city at the age of 19, and looking back, I can see how much this experience has changed me. It has been a day-to-day challenge, with new things to learn and overcome, but I am most grateful for everything this experience has taught me. If you ever find yourself hesitating whether to move abroad (especially to London) to study or not, please do! Your future self will be forever grateful.

What have you particularly enjoyed about your course?

I knew I wanted to do a Master's almost straight after my Bachelor's degree, but I wasn't sure which field I wanted to specialise in. After some research, I discovered that MA in Communication would be the perfect choice for me as I wanted to gain a broader understanding of the industry and its relationship with our society. I love the diversity of topics on the course and the ability to choose them according to your own interests. It is also a massive advantage that academic support is always present and available to help you get through your degree regardless of what you choose to study.

How have you found academic support as part of your studies?

Absolutely brilliant! I was doing a part-time degree, so the course was split into two years, and due to COVID-19, the first year was fully remote. I was hesitant about receiving my Masters's degree from my bedroom, as I thought there wouldn't be enough support, but I couldn't have been more wrong. Our course leader, lecturers, and tutors ensured we received as much support as possible to make our study experience unforgettable. Even though the course was mainly based on independent learning, I was always able to reach out and receive the help and advice I needed.

Tell us about any activities that you have undertaken outside of your course

I haven't participated in any extra-curricular activities while on the course, but I became a Course Representative during the first year of my degree. Despite the online teaching, I tried to seize as many opportunities as possible. Speaking to other students about their experience, resolving issues and delivering feedback to the academic staff has improved my listening, communication and leadership skills. Whatever course you are on, I recommend taking on similar roles, even if it is not something you have done before.

What would your advice be to someone considering studying at Westminster?

Westminster is an amazingly diverse place, offering students unique experiences and helping them to determine and achieve their life goals. I have spent five years at Westminster, and now, at the end of my journey, I know my experience in London would not be the same without it.

What's the best aspect of being a University of Westminster student?

I have mentioned this above, and I will repeat it again – the best aspect of being a University of Westminster student is the diversity! The wide range of subjects, things to learn and do, and people you meet! Not a day would pass at Westminster when I didn't feel excited or challenged, and this is the greatest thing a university can offer to its students.
