University of Westminster alumnus Oli Julian scores Netflix's Sex Education

Westminster alumnus Oli Julian is an RTS award-winning composer, producer and arranger of music for TV, commercials and film. He has scored the past three seasons and upcoming fourth season of Netflix’s hit series Sex Education, a comedy-drama that follows a group of teenage students who create an underground sex therapy clinic at their school.

Oli Julian said: “Working on Sex Education was a dream gig for me, allowing me to create a sound world that blended the John Hughes teen films of the 80’s with a more modern chamber-pop musical palette. It was great to get the synths, woodwind and percussion out at the same time. I also worked closely with Ezra Furman (who wrote the original songs) to make sure the score and songs really spoke to each other.”

Oli Julian received his Master’s degree in Music Production (now Audio Production) at the University of Westminster. He said: “I really owe a lot to my time at Westminster on the MA. Not only did it set me up with a lot of technical knowledge, but it also introduced me to a great network of people across the creative courses at Harrow who helped start me off on my career, many of whom I’m still working with today. I always say to people starting off - work with your contemporaries around you and find those great connections early because they may well be the ones you’re working with and giving you opportunities in 10 years’ time.”

Oli Julian’s other recent scoring credits include the comedy-drama Us (BBC Two), which earned him a 2021 nomination for an Ivor Novello Award in the Best Television Soundtrack category. He has also collaborated twice with filmmaker Coky Giedroyc on the features How To Build A Girl and Greatest Days and has scored TV series including Catastrophe (C4), Motherland (BBC), Breeders (Sky), Cuckoo (BBC3), Plebs (ITV2), BAFTA-winning In My Skin (BBC), and forthcoming and highly-anticipated The Ballad of Renegade Nell, starring Louisa Harland, and set to air on Disney+.
