The University of Westminster and the Regent Street Cinema have celebrated the release of the brand new studio biopic Bob Marley: One Love, with a screening and roundtable discussion where Marley experts came together to offer behind the scenes stories and share their insights.
The event took place on 16 February and was met with a full house at the Regent Street Cinema, with audience members excited to revel in the iconic story of the Reggae icon. As well as watching the latest film, they were given the chance to explore the cultural impact of Bob Marley through a unique lens, with an insightful discussion from those who knew the man behind the music.
Mykaell Riley, the Director of the Black Music Research Unit (BMRU) and Reader in Music Production Performance and Business at Westminster, moderated the discussion and was joined by Adrian Boot, Island Records’ in-house photographer during Marley’s era, journalist Chris Salewicz and author, and Bernie Dixon, former manager of Aswad and a childhood friend of Bob Marley.
Also in attendance was the Jamaican High Commission, Jamaican Tourist Board, Reggae Entrepreneur Levi Roots, poet Lemn Sissay and representatives from Island records.
Bob Marley's legacy stands as a timeless testament to the power of music in transcending borders and inspiring social change. His iconic sound, characterised by infectious rhythms and poignant lyrics, became a global symbol of unity, love and resistance.
The screening was featured in V13 Media, which offered a positive review of the event. The journalist wrote: “The guests all shared personal stories from their times with Marley, respectively, which gave the audience a much more personal insight into the life of Bob. It was endearing to see these three men who had never met each other interact like lifelong friends through their collective love for the man.”
Billy Watson, Managing Director of Regent Street Cinema, added: “In bringing Bob Marley: One Love to Regent Street Cinema in collaboration with Dr Mykaell Riley, we were able to host a sold-out, one-of-a-kind event that celebrated the singular talent of Bob Marley and his lasting legacy today.”
