Professor Andrew Groves, Professor of Fashion Design, was quoted in an article by the Financial Times about the rise of cargo pants in the 1990s and their return to popularity more than 20 years later.
The article examines why cargo pants – inspired by military attire - became the clothing item of choice among pop stars and other celebrities in the 1990s and early 2000s. It also looks at the point at which they became an object of ridicule for their bulky style and large pockets later on.
Professor Groves is quoted as saying: “It’s this idea of redundant functionality”.
He continues: “Why have you got all of those pockets if you don’t need them? Why are you wearing the dress of someone you’re not?” It’s a bit Walter Mitty, he added.
