Dr Yaz Osho, Principal Lecturer and Director of Academic Professional Development, has written a thought leadership article for the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s (LCCI) magazine, London Business Matters, which outlines how schemes designed to support Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) entrepreneurs can be more inclusive.
In the article, Dr Osho outlines the concept of intersectionality and why it is important that schemes and interventions targeting BAME entrepreneurs use an intersectional approach.
She said: “Considering the experiences of racially minoritised entrepreneurs through an intersectional lens allows for a nuanced understanding of how various identities of these entrepreneurs impact upon themselves to result in differential entrepreneurial outcomes and opportunities.”
Dr Osho also recommends some interventions which consider intersectionality in their approaches, such as increasing the opportunities for racially minoritised groups to act as intermediate funders when they intended beneficiaries of that fund, reducing instances where interventions fail to respond to the needs of racially minoritised entrepreneurs impacted by intersectional disadvantage, and commissioning research to understand how intersectionality impacts racially minoritised entrepreneurs.
In her conclusion to the article, she said: “It is by making intelligible the experiences of racially minoritised entrepreneurs, and how intersectionality impacts upon outcomes and opportunity that appropriate interventions can be designed and effectively rolled out.”
