If you need a laptop to support you with your studies, you can borrow one through our laptop loan scheme.

There are two different laptop loan services available to students depending on your individual needs:

  • Short-term laptop loans of MacBook Airs will be available via our Lapsafe units from early October
  • Long-term laptop loans, available via a request to personal tutors, will be available from September

Short-term laptop loans

We have increased the number of Lapsafe units available to students and we have Self Service Laptop units across all our sites. Students can borrow a laptop for 24 hours (on weekends laptops can be borrowed on Friday and returned on Monday). A maximum of one laptop can be borrowed at any time. Each Self Service unit consists of 2 bays of 12 Windows and/or Mac devices and each Self Service unit holds 24 devices.

Using Lapsafe units

Simply select the option you require on the touch screen and then touch your University card at the card reader on the unit and follow the instructions on the screen.

Long-term laptop loans

Laptop loans for the full academic year are available for enrolled students who:

  • are unable to access the library short-term loan services and on-site resources
  • do not already have a personal device suitable for the students chosen course
  • for whom a loan device is required for the entire academic year

The loan period runs in line with academic year study periods – you’ll need to return the device at the end of your current year.

How to request a laptop loan

If you need a long-term loan, please ask your personal tutor to complete the Student Loan Laptop Form on Sharepoint. Please note, students are not able to request long-term laptop loans themselves.

Your request will then be looked at, and IT services will be in touch as soon as possible to arrange delivery (or collection). If you need help with your request or equipment, get in touch with Service Desk.

Returning your laptop

The loan period runs in line with academic year study periods – you’ll need to return the device at the end of your current year.

To start the return process, simply raise a support ticket with the IT Service Desk via the 'Loan Device Returns' form. Alternatively, if you're unable to log in to your university account, you can email the IT Service Desk at - with the subject ‘returning a student loan laptop’. In the body of the email, please provide your student ID number (e.g., W1234567) and mobile number so the IT Service Desk can contact you to advise you on the return of your student loan laptop.

Should you require any further assistance, you can call the IT Service Desk on 020 7915 5488 (opening hours 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday).

Compliance with University policies

To borrow a laptop, you're required to agree to the University’s policies relating to Security, Acceptable Use and IT Asset Management.

Students who do not agree to these policies will not be issued with a device.

Please note, we are not able to ship devices outside of the UK.
