Sitting exams abroad

There are three main University exam periods each academic year when we run on-site exams and online timed assessments. You can see more information on when exams run on the exam timetables page

On-site exams take place in our London campuses. The expectation is that students will sit their exam as scheduled at the University of Westminster in London.

If you are unable to sit your exams as scheduled, we may be able to arrange for you to sit your exam abroad with the British Council. Any exams sat overseas will take place at the same time as those sat on the University of Westminster campus. Please note that this applies to exams only, not in-class tests.

You may be eligible to sit your exams abroad in the following special circumstances:

  • If you're an overseas student and have completed your course, but are required to complete a deferral or referral exam in order to graduate.
  • If you're required to spend a period abroad as part of your course (or you're on an approved student exchange), and the exam period falls during your time abroad.

You can see information regarding sitting exams abroad in the Academic Regulations (section 8.18).

The University charges an administration fee of £150 to arrange exams overseas and you would also be directly liable for any fees charged by the British Council.

You must sit your examination at British Council Offices and a list of these can be found on the British Council website. The examination must be held at the time that it is scheduled to take place at the University of Westminster in London. Different time zones may mean this is not possible in every situation.

If you have any individual examination arrangements in place, we cannot guarantee that these can be supported by the British Council office that you select. Please note, applications to sit exams overseas are not guaranteed to be accepted.

If you would like to request to sit your exam abroad, and you believe that you are eligible, please complete the Exams Abroad Request Form. The deadline to make such requests is 1 week before the exam period is due to begin.

If we are not able to arrange for an exam to be sat abroad and you are unable to attend the exam in London, you can register a Mitigating Circumstances claim to be reviewed by your Registry. This may result in your exam being deferred to a later time.

If you have any questions about sitting exams abroad, please contact the Library and Student Centre.
