Our students’ curiosity, ambition and engagement with the opportunities we offer – such as course field trips – helps them to get the most out of their time at Westminster.
English Literature and Language student Joshua Jenkins went on a course field trip to Canada with his peers to find inspiration for his course’s creative modules.
“The trip provided a great subject for reflective writing and creative writing in a number of assignments for my modules, and it also helped all of us to get to know lecturers we'd all continue to have across our degrees.
“It will undoubtedly be a highlight of my year, and of my university experience. I had never previously had the chance to explore anywhere beyond Europe and that was the immediate appeal of applying to go on this field trip. I came to learn about and appreciate so much about Canada.
“I loved the balance we had between an itinerary and self-exploration. It meant everyone was able to make the trip their own while also being able to get to know the others. I only knew one other student on the trip when I was leaving Heathrow, but now I know many more. We all got on so well, and it did not take long before we were all friends.
“Anecdotally, it was a pleasant surprise to find that quite a few of us involved were also LGBTQ, and there was something very wholesome and satisfying in finding each other as we did! As a bi person it is often difficult to make or even find these connections, and the trip proved to be an opportunity for that! Many of us have stayed in contact since returning to the UK, some of us have kept meeting, and some are planning on doing so through summer.
“I think we all learned, had a laugh and made friends. I'll never forget this experience.”
