New food waste bins in cafés

We are introducing food waste bins to cafés on campus this month to improve recycling rates.

New food waste bins are being introduced to cafés on campus from Monday 17 March to minimise the amount of rubbish going to general waste.

General waste at the University goes into incineration, which releases emissions into the atmosphere. Instead, food waste goes to anaerobic digestion, where organic matter is broken down to produce biogas, a renewable fuel, which is fed to the National Grid for energy. This is a better alternative for the environment.

Please only put the following foods in the food waste bin and keep the bin clean and tidy. If you have any issues using the bins, please let a café colleague know.

What can go in?

  • All uneaten food
  • Baked goods e.g. bread, cakes
  • Dairy products, eggs and eggshells
  • Fruit and vegetables, including raw and cooked vegetables and peel
  • Out-of-date or mouldy food
  • Raw and cooked meat or fish
  • Tea bags and coffee grounds

What NOT to put in

  • Liquids e.g. milk or leftover tea or coffee
  • Non-food products e.g. plastic
  • Any packaging

The new food waste bins contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3: Good Health and Wellbeing, 11: Sustainable Cities and Economies and 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. For any questions, please email [email protected].
