If you're interested in learning a new language or developing one of your current languages, why not take a Polylang module as part of your degree? You can study Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian or Spanish as an elective.
The programme is open to all students with all levels available, from beginner to advanced.
If you are a Level 4 or 5, you can start a new language as a complete beginner or you can continue with a language that you already know. However, there are certain rules that apply if you are in your final year of study:
- Final year students can only take a Grade 2 Polylang module if they have previously completed a Polylang module in the same language
- Final year students who have not yet taken a Polylang module can only take a module that is Grade 3 or above.
From September 2022, in addition to Polylang modules, the University will be delivering advanced language learning modules for Heritage speakers in Arabic, French and Spanish. These modules are designed for students who have had significant exposure to a language and can function at a high level orally in the personal sphere but need to enhance their oral and writing skills for use in academic and professional life. The aim is to develop students’ linguistic competences with a specific focus on register and accuracy when employing oral, written and mediation skills, so that they can function successfully in a range of real-world, professional situations.
How to Register
All students who wish to take a Polylang module have to complete an initial language assessment in order to be placed in the most appropriate language grade.
Any student wishing to take the Advanced Language Skills for Heritage Speakers module must demonstrate language skills that are approximately equivalent to B2.
To register, please complete the two following forms:
- Complete the module choice registration form from Registry
- Complete the Polylang Language Assessment
