Clearer guidelines around coursework submission

The Academic Standards team have updated the Handbook of Academic regulations, making it easier for students to understand the penalties around the late submission of coursework.

Our academic regulations govern the vast majority of our taught courses and help to ensure consistency in our quality and academic standards.

What you need to know

The updated regulations state that the penalties for late submission of coursework will apply to all deadlines i.e. the original deadline for coursework, a Reasonable Adjustment (RAF) extension, and the extended deadline following a successful mitigating circumstance claim for a 5-working-day extension.

The regulations now state that coursework submitted late but within 24 hours of the original deadline, will have 10 marks deducted from the original mark to a minimum of the pass mark (40% at undergraduate level or 50% at postgraduate level). For example, a piece of assessment awarded a mark of 70% would be reduced to 60% as a penalty for late submission.

Coursework submitted more than 24 hours late after the original deadline will be given a mark of zero.

If a coursework deadline extension has been granted following a Reasonable Adjustment approved by Disability Learning Support and/or a successful Mitigating Circumstances claim, the late submission penalties will be applied to the extended deadline.
