Please be aware of an important update to the delivery of Microsoft verification codes for multi-factor authentication (MFA).
You may now receive Microsoft verification codes in WhatsApp. These messages are similar to SMS, but have Microsoft branding and a verified checkmark.
If you do not have internet connectivity or if you do not have WhatsApp installed on your device, you will continue to receive SMS verification codes.
The first time you receive a verification code in WhatsApp, you will be notified by SMS text message of the changed behaviour.
The phone number associated with Microsoft's WhatsApp agent is: +1 (217) 302 1989. This can be verified in WhatsApp by clicking on ‘Microsoft’ with the checkmark at the top.
The verification code will be Microsoft branded with a tick (meaning that Microsoft is a trusted sender) and will look similar to the image shown on the right.
Verification codes are a crucial part of multi-factor authentication. MFA adds an extra layer of security to your account by requiring not only your password, but also a verification code sent to your phone. This helps protect your account from unauthorised access, even if someone else finds out your password.
Microsoft strongly advises all users to set up the Microsoft Authenticator app as their default method for multi-factor authentication. The Authenticator app provides a more secure and user-friendly experience than SMS or WhatsApp.
