Become a Friend of Arriving New Students (FANS)

Help our new undergraduate students have a great start here in September 2020!

FANS

A great start at university is all about making friends, learning the tricks of the trade, as well as having fun. We're looking for current students who would like to help make this happen during Orientation week for the new undergraduates joining us this September.

What do FANS do?

Our FANS (Friends of Arriving New Students) provide a personal welcome to new students at the University, helping them settle in and acting as their first point of contact for the first couple of weeks.

FANS are a vital part of the University welcome, this collaborative scheme between the University and the Students’ Union brings together the University Colleges, the Students’ Union and Corporate Services to deliver the best possible start for new students.

If you become one of our FANS, you'll be:

  • looking after a group of new undergraduates during their orientation

  • showing students the local area and parts of London

  • taking students on campus and library tours

  • showing students all about Blackboard

  • helping them plan their social life for the first week

  • making sure they attend all the relevant course and academic sessions

What are the benefits of being FANS?

There are many benefits to joining the scheme - previous FANS have described this experience as their highlight during their time at university.

As FANS, you'll get:

  • a cash reward on successful completion

  • a two-day training in key transferable skills

  • valuable volunteering experience

  • teamwork and leadership skills

  • points for Employability Award

  • recognition on your HEAR (Higher Education Achievement Record)

  • networking opportunities and making new friendships

Being FANS means you can gain essential skills required for employment whilst having some great fun!
