About the speakers
Panel chair: Professor Gunter Saunders, Associate Director, Digital Engagement and Libraries, University of Westminster
Professor Gunter Saunders has over 40 years of experience in higher education and is the Associate Director of Digital Engagement and Library Services. Originally a Microbiologist and Genetic Engineer, he spent over 20 years teaching and researching ways to enhance the production of antibiotics by microbes. Always interested in the role of technology in learning and teaching, around 15 years ago he made the shift to a professional services support role. In that role, he leads a group of over 100 colleagues in supporting students and colleagues in using digital technologies to enhance learning, teaching and the student experience. Professor Saunders is now known nationally and internationally through his published work in digital learning and engagement and his innovative approaches to teaching using digital technologies. Most recently, he has led the work at the University of Westminster in developing the university’s strategy in relation to the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and working. He has recently co-authored an article on the potential use of Generative AI in course planning. He facilitates workshops and discussions on various possible uses of Generative AI for students and colleagues.
Dr Doug Specht, Assistant Head of School of Media and Communication, University of Westminster (PhD, 2022)
Dr Doug Specht is a Reader in cultural geography and communication, and is also Assistant Head of the School of Media and Communication at the University of Westminster. His research explores themes related to environmental justice, human rights, and access to education, with a focus on the production and codification of knowledge though cartographic artefacts and in educational settings. In recognition of his work, he has been appointed as a Chartered Geographer and Chartered Teacher. In addition, he has been awarded Advanced Teacher Status, alongside being a Senior Fellow of AdvanceHE. Dr. Specht has authored numerous articles and books, including Mapping Crisis, the Routledge Handbook of Geospatial Technology and Society, the Media and Communications Student Study Guide and Imagining Apocalyptic Politics in the Anthropocene. He writes regularly on ethics, environmental and human rights, education, and mapping practices in such publications as WonkHE, The Conversation, Geographical, and for Times Higher Education. Dr. Specht undertook an MA in Higher Education and his PhD - on the codification of local knowledges through digital cartographic artefacts: A Case study of the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania - at the University of Westminster.
Yasmina Kazitani, Chief Marketing & Partnerships Officer, Interverse #AI (Communication MA, 2013)
Yasmina has over 18 years of experience in marketing, branding and business growth. Currently operating as the Chief Marketing Officer for an AI and gaming Web3 platform, Interverse AI. She is an active board member for the Blockchain Alliance, which provides education technical assistance and advice to government agencies regarding the uses of digital currencies and blockchain generally. She also supports various startups and projects around the world. Yasmina mentors University of Westminster University students and TechStars incubators in Tapei.
Alberto Rey Villaverde, Data Technology and AI Expert (Data Mining MSc, 2011)
Alberto is a seasoned Data Technology and AI expert with a track record in leading technology-centric teams across various sectors, including eCommerce, airline travel technology and telecommunications. He has implemented advanced algorithmic and analytical methodologies, which has significantly enhanced the digital and data-driven products of the companies he has worked with.
Alberto's leadership journey includes transformative roles at Virgin Media O2, where he played a pivotal role in modernising data practices, and at Just Eat Plc, where he oversaw a large-scale team supporting multiple functions and countries. He also founded the 'Data' function at easyJet, significantly contributing to its revenue enhancement and cost-saving strategies. Alberto's approach to leadership uniquely combines strategic foresight with technical acumen, making him a vanguard in innovative AI and analytic solutions. He holds a Master's in Data Mining from University of Westminster and an Executive MBA from Cranfield University.
