Architecture and Environmental Design BSc- 2022

Studying in London is life-changing and a great stepping-stone. There is a never-ending array of things to do and enjoy. The sheer number of opportunities is unparalleled. All of these contribute to better learning outcomes and professional prospects.

Why did you choose the University of Westminster?

I was looking specifically for a course that could give me both a path towards Architecture Part 1 and the tools and knowledge for evidence-based environmentally friendly design. The Architecture and Environmental Design BSc at the University of Westminster was the only one in London that offered this. Furthermore, the amazing Fabrication Lab facilities, with all the tools for rapid model-making and prototyping (like 3D-printing, laser cutting, casting, etc.) were also a big consideration.

How has your experience been studying in London?

Studying in London is life-changing and a great stepping-stone. There is a never-ending array of things to do and enjoy. The sheer number of opportunities is unparalleled. And all of these contribute to better learning outcomes and professional prospects. Covid did limit how much I could enjoy the city, the campus, and colleagues, but this was merely circumstantial, and I imagine that under other conditions, the experience would have been extremely gratifying.

What have you particularly enjoyed about your course?

The BSc in Architecture and Environmental Design fully met my expectations. I had prior degrees and professional experience in energy in the built environment but was looking to leverage that knowledge in parallel with architecture. The course is extremely demanding, however, it does manage to integrate the teaching of architecture (to RIBA part 1 level), with the advanced tools of environmental modelling and evidence-based design. With all the actions that will be needed over the next few decades to lessen the damage of climate change, this particular knowledge is extremely relevant, essential, and in high demand.

How have you found academic support as part of your studies?

There is a clear perception of ‘duty of care’. Tutors are very approachable and will go out of their way to help students. This is also helped by the course’s small class size. Still, they have no qualms in pushing us to our limits and are there to help us with any obstacles. They are there to guide us through the journey but also to prepare us for future challenges.

Are there any stand-out facilities associated with your course?

The Fabrication Lab is simply exceptional and provides an amazing addition to the learning of architecture. Particularly in such a progressive course as is the BSc, having the opportunity to freely explore rapid modelling of complex shapes and physically test them right away is extremely useful, both in the learning process and in future-proofing skills.

Have you used the University Careers and Employability Service?

I have participated in several activities promoted by this team as well as the University’s mentoring scheme. The latter, in particular, has been helpful in getting a better understanding of how employers in architectural practices may perceive my uncommon professional path. London may have lots of opportunities, but it is also a crowded market. This team helps you to stand out from the crowd.

What would your advice be to someone considering studying at Westminster?

Be prepared to work hard but also do not forget to enjoy all that the university and London have to offer.

What's the best aspect of being a University of Westminster student?

You are a part of an extremely diverse community of peers with whom you can become a much better person. Through sharing of experiences, cultures, and perspectives, you have all the ingredients to get a much broader understanding of the world and, ultimately, of yourself.

Other thoughts

I am glad I chose this course at the University of Westminster. But I am also glad the process is ending, especially with good prospects. This course has made me stronger!
