Who we are
The Faith and Spirituality team are here to encourage all students and colleagues to explore their sense of spiritual wellbeing as part of an authentic learning experience.
We offer a compassionate space to contemplate together in the spirit of openness and honesty.
We provide opportunities for confidential contact on occasional or regular basis, especially in times of difficulty.
Spiritual and pastoral support
Our spiritual and pastoral support appointments are available to discuss any personal issues that are affecting your life and studies. In these sessions, you'll enter a compassionate space to confidentially share your thoughts, feelings or associations in relation with the external world. For example, this can connect with ideas around your faith, culture, relationships or the turbulent times in which we are living.
Meditation and mindfulness support
Student Mindfulness Programme
This programme is for all students who would like to begin exploring or continue improving their skills of awareness in relating with all of life experience while studying at University.
The sessions involve a meditative practice. It is spiritual, though not aligned with any faith tradition. This is fully explained, then through a guided introduction we spend a period of time in silence during which ideas and imagery may form, with a range of relevance to the focus. We gently return to the group, share observations and ask any questions that arise. Each week has a particular theme.
On registration, you will have access to an online group chat for discussing preparation and sharing resources.
How we can help
During this demanding time we are offering one-to-one pastoral and spiritual support appointments online or by phone.
We also provide guidance in meditation, mindfulness and everyday awareness training.
These practices are delivered in an open style and are available to people of all faiths and none. They can be helpful in strengthening our ability to stay calm in times of crisis, and to nourish and learn about our mind, body and spirit.
Religious observance dates
The University’s Religious Observance Calendar identifies principal religious festivals on which certain University activities should be avoided. These are dates on which it would be unreasonable to expect a follower of the recognised religion to engage with learning and teaching opportunities or assessment requirements.
More information can be found in our Religion, Belief and Study Policy:
To check the dates of principal religious festivals for the current and next academic year, visit our Religious observance dates page.
Contemplation and prayer rooms
As part of the University's support for holistic wellbeing there are prayer and contemplation facilities located across our campus sites. Students and staff of all faiths and none are invited to use these spaces.
Please note:
- No personal or shared items can be left in the facilities, and so users are requested to bring their own prayer carpets, meditation cushions or other items and to take them away when finished. Items left in the rooms will be removed.
