About this event

In celebration of the winter solstice, Yalda is historically celebrated in Iran. As the darkness deepens, Iranians come together to celebrate the rebirth of the sun and the triumph of light over darkness. Friends and family gather, often at elders' homes, to revel in the season's festivities. Nuts and fruits adorn tables, and the light of flickering candles recites Hafiz's poems.

The World in Westminster series is part of the QHT EDI Project, “Westminster for All - Equity, Inclusion and Belonging” sponsored by Deputy Vice-chancellor Dibyesh Anand in collaboration with International Student Champions and the Student Union. The series, after nine successful events in 2023–2024, is currently running for the second year. We have run brilliant and inclusive festival events, including Diwali, Chanukah, Yalda Night, Nowruz, Ramadan and Passover.
