Useful info
During Sustainability Week, we will host an E-waste Amnesty Box, so that students and colleagues can donate their unwanted electrical items e.g. cables so that they can be recycled.
At Westminster, we have a zero-waste-to-landfill policy and are working across our campuses to increase our 44% recycling rate. Over the next year, you will see us introducing food waste bins and coffee cup bins across our sites in a bid to recycle more waste. Reusable items are always best - don't forget that if you bring a reusable coffee cup to any of our cafes on-site, you get a 25p discount on barista-crafted coffee.
Wednesday 19 February – Sustainable Careers
Location: Regent Street Campus
Mid-week, we will host a series of events to encourage discussion around sustainability at Westminster and how to develop sustainable skills for future employment.
Sustainability panel
We will be joined by sustainability professionals, including alumnus Nuria Revuelta Sanchez, founder of The Dyas, Lily Green from Hubbub and Alice Cornwell from Kensington and Chelsea Council. Learn from their journey into a career in sustainability and how you can develop skills to enter the sustainability industry. The session will include short talks from our presenters and will be followed by a Q&A.
When and where? UG05, Regent Street campus 17:30-18:30
Launch of SDG network
We are pleased to be launching our new SDG Network! We will provide information about the network which will allow the opportunity for questions. The event will include a networking opportunity.

Thursday 20 February – Biodiversity Creative Session
Location: New Cavendish Campus
Although we are a city University, improving biodiversity on our site and encouraging action towards greening our spaces has always been one of our sustainability priorities. Join us for our workshops to help encourage biodiversity in your gardens.
Bug hotel-making session
We will be creating mini-bug hotels that you can put in your garden or balcony to provide shelter for creepy crawlies. Insects maintain healthy soil, recycle nutrients, pollinate flowers, and control pests, so they are crucial to ecosystems! Bring an empty tin can to our event, which you can use as the framework for the bug hotel.
When and where? C1.09, New Cavendish campus 11:00-12:00
Plant propagation workshop
Plant propagation is a great way to increase the number of plants in your home. We will be teaching attendees how to propagate houseplants from a parent plant. Bring a clean, empty jar to fill with water to use for the plant propagation.
When and where? C1.09, New Cavendish campus 13:00-14:00
Friday 21st February – Energy and Carbon Roadshow
Location: Marylebone Campus
One of our most ambitious sustainability targets is to achieve Net Zero by 2035 for scope 1 and 2 emissions. To achieve this, we will need everyone at Westminster to think about reducing energy use and carbon emissions across our sites.
Carbon and energy pop-up
Learn about energy consumption and carbon reduction at the university and learn more about your personal carbon footprint. Play our How Bad Are Bananas? Game and take our take to find out more about energy and carbon at UoW.
If you want to make an impact, challenge yourself to pledge to reduce your carbon footprint. We will be showcasing all of your pledges after Sustainability Week.
When and where? Learning Platform, Marylebone 10:30-15:00
No need to sign up, just drop-in
Water bottle design competition
We are looking for a new eye-catching design to be showcased on our water bottles to reflect our sustainability ambitions. Prize vouchers will be available for winners. Keep your eyes peeled for more information on how you can get involved.
Our energy use on site is significant. In 2024, we spent over £3.2 million on energy, and these prices are set to increase. We are working hard to reduce our energy use and look at better ways to generate electricity on-site. Last year, our solar thermal panels at Harrow produced enough energy to reduce our carbon footprint by 10 tonnes.
We have set a net zero target for scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2035. We need everyone’s help to make this target happen. If you want to learn more about carbon costs, the impacts of everyday activities, and how to reduce emissions, you can join one of our carbon literacy training sessions.
