You’re invited to a London E-waste Hackathon sponsored by Virgin Media O2 on Wednesday 27 November at Kings College London.
The deadline to sign up is Sunday 17 November. You can register for a place now. There are limited spaces and we can accommodate up to 10 students per University.
What is a Hackathon?
A Hackathon is a collaborative event where teams work together to generate creative solutions to specific problems or challenges. These are used in different industries (e.g., engineering, design, social sciences, business, etc.) to explore possible solutions to a problem.
Why E-waste?
Electronic waste (aka e-waste) is the fastest growing type of waste in the world. Did you know the UK is the second largest producer of e-waste per person? Electronics contain valuable, increasingly rare or sometimes harmful materials like gold, cobalt or heavy metals that often get binned instead of recycled. What’s even more urgent, elements hidden in electronics, like copper, lithium and nickel, are resources needed to shift the UK energy grid away from fossil fuels.
Why take part?
You will have a chance to shape your own ideas for raising awareness and communicating the issue, work with other students from across disciplines, and develop your employability skills in a challenge-based setting. You will also get the opportunity to present your ideas to a judging panel including Virgin Media O2, e-waste B-Corps, academics, and environmental charity Hubbub.
The winning teams will receive a cash prize:
- 1st place - £400
- 2nd place - £200
- 3rd place - £100
Where will the Hackathon take place, and when?
The Hackathon will be held in the James Clerk Maxwell Building, Kings College London Waterloo Campus, SE1 8WA on Wednesday 27 November, from 11am-5pm.
