The Climate and Energy Policy Lab is an exciting new unit run by climate change and energy policy experts at the University of Westminster.
About the event
Climate assemblies are an unprecedented development in climate governance, bringing everyday citizens selected by democratic lottery into the process of designing climate policy. The French Citizens’ Convention for the Climate established by President Macron in 2019–2020 was a catalyst for a wave of climate assemblies across Europe – most at the local level, but with a number of other national governments and parliaments organising assemblies. Permanent climate assemblies have been established in Brussels and Milan and non-governmental organisations, including RSPB, WWF and National Trust, have commissioned independent assemblies to inform their campaigning work. XR and other radical social movement organisations demand more empowered citizens’ assemblies to respond to the climate and ecological emergency. What is behind this wave of climate assemblies? How much impact have they had? What can we hope for climate assemblies in the future?
