As part of the Black History Year programme, we want to discuss and highlight Black identity representation in arts and culture.
Bringing this to life, we are launching BHY Beyond Books in April 2023 to review a series, book, and film that highlight Black British representation.
BHY Beyond Books
To begin, we will review the award-winning series I May Destroy You (2020), written by and starring Michaela Coel.
We will launch on the evening of April 27 with a screening of the last episode of I May Destroy You. This is an opportunity to delve deeper into Black history and explore the nuances of contemporary Black culture.
We encourage all participants to watch the entire series, but it is up to you whether you watch the last episode before the screening or not. Either way, we invite you to join us for an engaging and thought-provoking discussion on Black history and culture.
About the series
I May Destroy You premiered on BBC in 2020 and consists of 8 episodes.
Trigger warning: the programme explores the theme of sexual assault.
The story follows the struggles and accomplishments of a Black British writer as she works on writing a book, maintaining a following, exploring a new relationship, and trying to make sense of a recent attack.
By taking us through her creative process, Coel explores the psyche of an assault victim, while simultaneously challenging our own prejudices and judgments. The actress' unique storytelling style provides a brilliant depiction of what it means to be a woman and a young, Black Londoner.
BHY Beyond Books will explore topics such as femininity, rape culture, Black writers in the media, and the many poignant themes this series raises.
Please note that there are limited spaces available for this screening event. Therefore, we kindly ask that you only sign up if you are committed to attending.
We want to ensure that everyone who wants to attend can do so, and your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your understanding and we look forward to seeing you there!
