Centre for English Learning and Teaching (CELT)

CELT was established in September 2007 to bring together all the University’s English language teaching.

CELT houses two main teaching areas:

For native speakers:

For non-native speakers:

  • English for Academic Purposes (EAP) modules, formerly part of Polylang, for international undergraduate and postgraduate University of Westminster students who have learnt English as a foreign language.
  • English as a Foreign Language (EFL) courses (fee-paying; separate from the University’s modular programme).

EAP modules

Around 500 students every year take one of our three year-long, credit-bearing undergraduate EAP modules (1EAPP04, 1EAPP05 or 1EAPP06). Students on these modules study a wide range of academic skills, including writing skills; research and referencing skills; and oral presentation skills. All assessment - coursework and the end-of-year examination - is centred round these three key areas of academic literacy. At postgraduate level, around 250 students take the Postgraduate Academic English (1PAEP01) module.

EAP also offers specialist modules to meet the needs of particular courses. For instance, we offer a spoken communication skills module tailored to the needs of BA European Management students at Harrow. We also offer a specialised module called ‘Advanced English for the Cultural Industries’ based on the needs of postgraduate media students. This too takes place at Harrow. CELT and EAP are always interested in co-operating with course leaders in the setting up of specialist EAP modules.
