The University of Westminster hosted the What it Takes to Build a Portfolio Career event, where Westminster alumna Rituja Rao spoke to students and recent graduates about how to start crafting multiple career paths and income streams to develop a portfolio career.

The event was organised by the Alumni Relations Office and was attended by 80 Westminster students and recent graduates who came to learn from the experiences of Journalism BA alumna Rituja Rao.

Rituja is an award-winning Delivery Manager, Industry Speaker and emerging thought leader, currently working as a Senior Enterprise Project Manager at Deliveroo, delivering exciting new products and leading global partner integrations. She has a track record of successfully delivering complex IT projects for various Banking, Fintech and Tech organisations. She is vocal about graduate careers in Tech regardless of STEM degrees and the power of social mobility. Rituja is a strong advocate of skills diversity in tech and uses her platforms to raise awareness about no-code tech careers. She sits on various Charity and university advisory boards as a Board Director and Trustee, sharing her expertise on the future of work and Gen Z careers.

During the event she spoke about how to build an interesting and varied portfolio career, which entails having multiple jobs and roles instead of just one at a single company.  She shared how to use a career as a vehicle for self-expression by leveraging all the different things that make a person unique. The discussion was then passed over to the audience who had the opportunity to ask questions.

The audience found the event insightful, with one saying: “She was amazing, very inspiring and engaging to listen to. It was great to hear from someone so successful at such a young age.”

Another added: “Such an engaging speaker. I came today simply to get out of my comfort zone. Super glad I came today. I’ve learnt so much that I didn’t think I could.”

The What it Takes event series features exciting and innovative alumni speakers sharing their experience and advice on a range of topics, including employability, personal and professional development. More events will be announced soon.
