The University of Westminster held a celebration event in honour of Ken Subraj, President of Zara Realty Holdings Corporation, New York, and 1967 alumnus of Mechanical, and Production Engineering courses of The Regent Street Polytechnic, the predecessor of the University. The occasion also served as the launch of Ken’s biography, titled Footprints of a Farmer.

The celebration event took place in Fyvie Hall at 309 Regent Street last month, and was attended by 80 colleagues, students and alumni. The occasion provided an opportunity to highlight the power of education, and the places it can take people with drive and determination. It covered the past, present and future of the University, from the institution that Ken experienced as The Regent Street Polytechnic, to the here and now, and onto the further progress of the student experience at Westminster.

The speakers included Ken Subraj, his brother Harry Subraj, and daughter Dinah Subraj; along Dr Jay Sobhraj, Executive Vice President of Zara; and former Office Manager Sandy Samlall. From the University of Westminster, Professor Peter Bonfield, Vice-Chancellor and President; Jordan Scammell, Head of Development and Fundraising; and Lorna Bannister, Archivist, held a speech. To them joined Richard B. Mahase, Biographer and Author of Footprints of a Farmer.

The event featured an organ concert by Professor Andrew Lynn, Pro Vice-Chancellor at the University; and a performance from singer and alumna Csilla Jakab. Guests were also offered welcome drinks and dinner buffet reception. The event ended with book signing, with copies given to guests.

Talking about the event and the University, Ken said: “I am extremely thrilled to be within the walls of this historic building once more. When I think of my success, this prestigious institution is at the summit of my studies. With its fine modern features, agreeable knowledgeable fraternity, the committed organisational stewardship of Professor Peter Bonfield, and Jordan Scammel, among many others, this institution will continue to be the source of that light that leads its registrants to unbelievable rewards. And hopefully, given another opportunity, in another capacity, renew my allegiance to my alma mater.”

Speaking about the celebration, Professor Peter Bonfield added: "It was super to celebrate with Ken and we congratulate him on his very successful career since graduating in Engineering. Ken's story will be an inspiration to so many international students; we are very grateful for the financial support he's giving our students and look forward to continuing to build our relationship with Ken and his family in the future."

Ken Subraj is a self-made millionaire, born in the suburbs of Guyana. He moved to London at the age of 20 to pursue an Engineering degree at The Polytechnic. From humble beginnings, he developed himself into an international structural engineer, working on projects in South America and the Middle East. He later joined his brothers to establish Zara, which has become one of the foremost property ownership organisations in New York.

The Subraj family’s charitable activity stems from the Zara Charitable Foundation, the George Subraj Family Foundation, and the Jay & Sylvia Subraj Foundation. Examples of their donations include the creation of new student technology centres and labs at over 10 locations worldwide, the establishment of a eye clinics and pioneering organ transplant programs, and community support aligning with the company’s commitment to social responsibility.

Remembering his student years, Ken said: “Upon reflection, each class, each tutor at The Polytechnic provided the formula and encouragement to help make me shine. Graduating as Best Engineering Student and Bronze Medal winner in 1967 is undoubtedly my most significant personal achievement in the sciences, which henceforth solidified the foundation of each professional decision.”
