The playbook provides guidance to practitioners on how to make the most of public transport and how to inspire people to use it. In addition to Professor White’s testimony, it features interviews from public officials and transport experts across Europe including Katharina Pötter, Mayor of the City of Osnabrück in Germany; Endre Angelvik, Executive Vice President of Radical Innovation at Ruter As; the Norwegian transport authority responsible for the districts of Oslo and Akershus; and Antonio García Pastor, Director of Operations at one of the largest public transport operators in Spain.

Speaking about the value of public transport, Professor White said: “Public transport offers people access to critical activities such as work, education, shopping, and leisure activities. By providing this access, it brings people together and strengthens social cohesion.”

He also stressed the importance of assessing the benefits of bus priority lanes, using established evaluation methods. These generally result in a net reduction in personal travel time, and for the bus user not only reduce average travel time , but also reduce fluctuations in delays.
