The Centre for Law, Society and Popular Culture is pleased to share its end of 2022 Round Up.

The Centre's Christmas celebration at Regent Street Cinema

Professor Pippa Catterall was appointed to the Boards of the Doreen Bird Foundation and Bird College of Dance and Musical Theatre in November. Her chapter on Religion and the Rise of Mass Democracy in Britain was published in John Carter Wood (ed) Christian Modernities in Britain and Ireland in the Twentieth Century (Abingdon: Routledge, 2022) on Friday 30 December.

Centre Fellow Philip Kolvin KC gave a guest, public lecture titled An Ethical Social Economy.

Finally, to round off the year the Centre hosted a Christmas Celebration in the Regent Street Cinema on Thursday 15 December. This was a follow-up of an online event the Centre hosted during lockdown.

During lockdown the Centre carried on delivering events that promised to ‘disrupt your everyday’. These included the premiere of the play Dance, an online reading of Sus, online creative writing workshops for vulnerable people at the charity Open Age, and more.

Drawing on the Centre’s idea of ghost gigs, the event at Regent Street Cinema was a replay of the original December 2020 event. Rather than its original online appearance, this one was held in person, in a beautiful space.

The original event was partly inspired by Tim Burgess’ Twitter listening parties. The Centre was delighted that after contacting Tim his team agreed to create the December 2020 event as a replay.

If you missed it, you can take a look in your own time.
