Welcome to the Westminster Development Studies Symposium 2024! Join us at the University of Westminster in the heart of London for a day filled with insightful discussions and networking opportunities.

What to expect

This year's symposium will delve into the theme of foreign investment. In the morning, our panel will examine the ramifications of third-country investment in European ports, focusing on the cases of Piraeus, Hanburg and Southampton ports. We'll explore contrasting perspectives: some argue that these investments represent strategic asset sales and efficiency gains, while others highlight the surge in container volumes and job creation.

As part of the Global Uzbekistan Festival, our afternoon session will scrutinize foreign investment in Uzbekistan. Despite witnessing increased investment inflows in recent years, Uzbekistan still trails behind Kazakhstan. What factors contribute to making this double-landlocked nation an appealing destination for investors? Are there discernible positive spill-over effects on the local economy?

Whether you're a student, researcher or practitioner in the realm of development studies, this event offers a prime opportunity to gain fresh insights and exchange ideas.
