About this exhibition

Fashion Design BA Level 4 Sustainability Module 2024

Level 4 students on the Fashion Design BA course have embraced sustainability in the 'Denim as Art Project' which is part of the new course that has sustainable principles at its core.

The students were encouraged to explore the creative potential of denim as a textile; specifically, second-hand denim that they had collected from friends and family, their own wardrobes, and charity shops. Experimenting with textile manipulation, the patina of used clothing, unpicking old garments to re-use the cloth by printing, patching, and recolouring different shades of denim to play with both of texture and moulage or draping on the stand.

The beautiful and varied results show how design can act as an intervention to disrupt the unsustainable practices of fashion, providing routes forward into a sustainable future.

Creativity transforming denim waste into a multitude of desirable and innovative new forms.
